Be honest! Honesty is the best policy! It is okay to embellish a bit but do not loose site of the topic your are trying to convey. More and more employers are runing background checks so you need to honest about your work history. Being honest does not equal boring:) You can keep your topics exciting by touching on the key points and conducting a deeper dive into areas you feel best match the potential job - this is important.

Pitfalls of the internet. Depending on your age, you might want to check the internet for any references to your name. Why? Because most potential employers will! If you have been reckless, chances are you are listed on a social site somewhere. If everything is clean and respectable, you are in good shape; if not, try to clean it up!

What the gaps! If you have a gap in your work history, not a problem. Simply explain the gap and even draw attention to it. If a potential employers spots a gap and does not see a logic reason for it, they may feel you are hiding something. If you suffered a layoff, welcome to the club! In recent economic times, layoffs have occured at unpresidented rates. If you suffered a layout, simply explain the situation and your desire to work - this can go a long way.
